Narative
Bias is one of the first things we try to teach children about writting,
after that messyness with spelling and subject verb agreement, and it is
one of the last things they learn about writting in the public school
system. We say, look, here is a writter, they have written about this
thing, but they have slanted it for a position. Many people have pointed
out that blogs are biased, and of course no one gives them a cookie for
this, because it is so obvious.
But unfortunately, there is more here. Blogs are a Narative, a narative of someone's life. They are a public form of our private stories. Some people put quite a bit of themselves into their blogs, and some are more reserved. The real thing that a narrative has is continuity. You don't want it swinging arround too much, so you leave some things out. You dance arround the big things in your life, until you have a way to say them that you are willing to commit to being part of your story. At least, I do. |
